Bella Vineyards & Wine Caves 2014 'Belle Canyon' Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel

Mission Codename Belle Bella

A recent tasting panel of many Zinfandels revealed one big truth and this tremendous deal. Bella could easily be our favorite consistently outstanding Zinfandel specialist and whatever consulting winemaker Michael Dashe touches, it turns to gold. No wonder, Mr. Dashe mastered his skills at some of the most iconic wineries around the globe including American legend Ridge and Bordeaux 1st Growth Lafite Rothschild and continues to craft his masterpieces under his own Dashe label along with Bella and their second label - Ru’s Farm. The opportunity to experience this good a Zinfandel with 44% savings landing it at around $25 is a true privilege.

Purple as a plum around the glowing rim, turning deeper into black at its core. A basket full of freshly picked wild summer berries come to mind first with the nose, laced with exotic sweet spices. Juicy ripe cherries dipped in dark chocolate and fig are backed by lively acidity with an authoritative mouthfeel. The suave tannins, the rich core of fruit and gamey tones linger effortlessly on the long finish. Ideal pairing candidates are a hearty roasted leg of lamb, grilled summer vegetables, or cheeses and fruit, the super versatile style of Zin this one is!

Mike Dashe has been at it since 1986 when he got his start with Napa’s Schramsberg Wine Cellars. In 1987 he went to work for Far Niente. From there, Michael took his wine career abroad, where he made wine for Cloudy Bay of New Zealand and the fabled Château Lafite Rothschild. Just a couple of vintages ago, these superb wines caught Antonio Galloni of Vinous’ attention; “I was quite impressed with the lineup from Bella Vineyards, these Zinfandels and Zinfandel-based blends pack a serious punch” confirming what Robert Parker wrote earlier; “Bella has consistently done well with their Zinfandel portfolio.”
