Mission Codename Black Unicorn

Another visit to the Opal Moon and back anyone?

Meritage is the popular designation coined for Bordeaux style blends, often lead by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that originated in the 1980s leading to the famous “cult” wine era of Napa Valley. The Meritage Association defined this popular style as; “a blend of two or more of the red “noble” Bordeaux varieties - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot” though the latter two are rarely seen in majority. This 2012 Opal Moon is about half Malbec and half Petite Verdot, making it a true unicorn of a Meritage. These grape varieties normally provide the blend with intense dark fruits, spicy accents, and color as prized blending components in small percentages, but as the duo that makes up the wine altogether, the result is an explosively rich, one-of-a-kind monster.

Glass-staining pitch-black color, with the narrowest of a glowing purple rim amid garnet hues. Dense, brooding black plum and chocolate on the intense nose are backed by ample wood and smoky game. A beautifully structured wine, with concentrated tannins and dynamic, juicy dark berries, all comingling in the midpalate. Finishes with major force, yet even with all the heft, it’s stylish, complex and age-worthy. Pair with a smoked rack of ribs with traditional side dishes like baked beans or creamy mac ‘n’ cheese.

Opal Moon, owned by the Bonneau family and made by the 3rd generation vintner John Bambury, has as of late, been leaving us moonstruck with their quality. As they like holding wine back to release until ready, these wines are often with a pleasantly aged character, masterfully crafted in a style that falls between modern, ripe Napa counterparts and a Bordeaux from an outstanding harvest. With the 50th anniversary of the historic lunar landing fast approaching, this would be yet another perfect “trip to an opal moon and back” red to celebrate a momentous year with. As with all their other wines, there are only a few barrels made, and we were able to secure exclusive access to a limited amount that will GO FAST at 50% OFF.
