Every now and again, we’re offered a wine whose origins are closely guarded secrets. Such is the case with today’s dark, dense, and delicious JenniferMark Wines 2014 Coombsville Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. We’re not allowed to say what specific vineyard this wine hails from, but we can tell you that you’d spend much more for this wine if it came from [REDACTED] vineyard.

This Napa Cabernet is incredibly dense with a blood red hue and a purple tinge to it. Almost intimidating! The nose is fresh with bright red fruit such as maraschino cherry and fresh strawberries. There’s also a pleasant alfalfa note with sarsaparilla and dark chocolate. Complex and intriguing. On the palate, the cherry quality becomes even more pronounced with both red and black cherry flavors. Wild plum, pomegranate, anise, and fruitcake join the scene as well. This wine is very well constructed with a viscous mouthfeel that evenly coats the palate, soft tannin, and delicate acidity. Perfect for any main course, but would be a real treat with an ice cream sundae with french vanilla, chocolate syrup, and nuts.

The Coombsville AVA is an American Viticultural Area located within the Napa Valley AVA just east of the city of Napa. The appellation varies from near sea level at the Napa River on the west to 1,900 feet at the ridge of the Vaca Mountain Range. Its’ proximity to San Pablo Bay contributes to the temperate climate of Coombsville. Cooling effects of marine air and fog occur almost daily during the growing season, arriving earlier, and lingering longer than in the more northern regions of Napa Valley. Temperatures are less extreme during the winter frost season. The Coombsville soils are dominated by the volcanic rhyolitic tuff sedimentary rock and lava flows of the Vaca Range on the eastern side of the Napa Valley. Located in the wide alluvial deposits created by the wearing down of the hillsides, the Coombsville soils contain abundant rock, gravel, and, in some areas, are layered with volcanic ash deposits from Mount George.
