We have a beauty of a Cabernet Franc for you today, the food-fabulous Subida di Monte 2014 Collio DOC Cabernet Franc. We searched the world outside of our usual California stomping grounds for a great Cab Franc - and found this delicious Italian treat. This aromatic wine was made in the Bordelaise (Bordeaux) style, giving it unique character.

This Cabernet Franc catches your attention with an unusual gem-like mauve coloring that is semi-translucent with excellent color consistency through to the edge. The nose is particularly alluring, spilling over with juicy, fresh red fruit with a gorgeous spice back. Aromas include strawberry, raspberry, watermelon, red licorice, and Asian 5-spice. The spice profile takes over with cigar box, subtle cinnamon, and nutmeg, the fruit and earth are on the back end with plum and blackberry compote, coffee and red clay. Buckle up for an Italian take on Cab Franc: It’s lighter in body than other countries’ versions allowing for a smoother-drinking experience, allowing you to focus on the fruit which hangs out on the palate for a wonderfully long finish. A subtle Italian wine such as this deserves a comparable dish. If you can find lamb shanks at your local grocer, try your hand at the classic dish osso buco.

This wine hails from Collio, in the village of Cormons. This production zone is one of the only in the world to produce a Cabernet Franc that is made in the Bordelaise (Bordeaux) style. This wine may seem like something of an enigma, but what it really is is special.
