Mission Codename Thrice the Prize

When we featured a Beringer Chardonnay a few weeks back, it was a massive hit. We reminded our Operatives the recent enthusiasm Robert Parker wrote of; “despite the enormity of this enterprise (multiple wineries and a global network), the flagship estate in northern California, Beringer Vineyards, continues to be in very capable winemaking hands, and the quality of the wines remains exceptionally impressive” he said, adding that “these are all excellent wines.” So, we kept pursuing another incredible deal, this time a Pinot that was made for 2 vintages only as the fruit that goes into it is now held back for much more expensive wines. At just $23.99 and 40% savings, it’s a TON of top of the line Pacific influenced Pinot.

Radiant ruby and raspberry red, with the classic glow of a warm, early-ripening vintage. A playful dance between ripe, racy fruit and savory overtones that is simply compelling on the brilliant nose. Blood orange, sage, cocoa powder, and cranberry add its bright, high-toned aromatics on the palate as each sip opens up new doors within. Floral and earth tones add to the ample and persistent final shades of delicate nuance. A gently grilled wild sockeye salmon would finely match the racy fruit and silky tannins here as the centerpiece of a meal to pair around it.

A magnifying glass helps explain what makes this wine so compelling, as it’s an artistically crafted blend of 3 impeccably farmed and highly sought-after sites. The Grace Benoist Ranch in Carneros is the famed source for Etude Wines, the Hallberg Ranch in the Green Valley of Russian River Valley is farmed by Emeritus, and ‘the little star’ La Petite Étoile in the northern Russian River corridor is a prime Chateau St. Jean site. The synergy of these 3 outstanding vineyards is the hidden formula behind this jaw-dropping value, where the whole obviously has become more than the sum of its parts. This beauty is SPOT ON as to what a perfect Pinot should be, drinking twice its price. No, make that thrice!

Here’s what the wine press says:

92 Points – James Suckling “Lovely tangy fruit to this Pinot with dried strawberry, walnut and light milk chocolate. Medium body, delicate tannins and a fresh finish. Beautiful to drink now.”
