Mission Codename Open the Floodgates!

Insert rant - Dear friends at higher places, if you’re tuned in, please stop changing names of famous single vineyards, it gets super confusing! - Over.

The recently renamed Starscape Vineyard was originally the Floodgate Vineyard, and owes its reputation to Pinot Noir visionary Gary Farrell. At a sweet spot within Russian River Valley, it abuts the Kistler Vineyard on one side and the Ritchie Vineyard on the other. Neither of these two names can be had on a label anywhere near $28.99. That fact aside, this Pinot Noir has double 90-point accolades to boost, and it’s gotten FAR better over the few years beyond those early impressions that we share below…

A shyer shade of crimson is elevated by glimmers of ruby as shadows move with each swirl. Aromas of orange peel and dried strawberries meld into notions of plum and white pepper to fill the bouquet with each sniff. Full-bodied, with soft and velvety tannins and spicy oak nuances over freshly picked cherries is the initial palate impression. Long and flavorful on the persuasive finish, delicious and generous now, with a juicy fruit core that rings complexity. Time has done wonders to this admirable Pinot Noir, and it sure would enhance duck or salmon dishes, preferably grilled, served over risotto and greens.

Single vineyard Russian River Pinot under $30 is so hit or miss a category that a few exist, is what we see and find through our picky Tasting Panel. Yet worthy of your discerning palates dear Operatives, this will stand up to easily twice the price counterparts!

Here’s what the wine press has to say:

90 Points – Wine Enthusiast - “This vineyard used to be called the Floodgate Vineyard and has been a consistent source of grapes to the producer. Soft, plush and brimming in dark rustic cherry and cardamom, this wine is also plenty earthy, a mix of turned earth and dried herb. The tannins are thick and strong.

90 Points - PinotFile - “Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Nice floral, pine forest and spiced cherry perfume. Luxurious and polished in the mouth, featuring a mid weight core of black cherry, and purple and black berry fruits. Admirable balance with only a hint of oak, finishing modestly. Charming upon opening.
