Mission Codename Not For The Meek
Zinfandel fans are officially put on notice: Today’s Meeker Vineyard 2012 ‘Barrel Select’ Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel has everything you are looking for. Huge fruit, huge flavor, with an equally approachable price tag and drinking experience.
The Meeker Family has been making wine and earning medals in Dry Creek since 1984. They’ve learned a thing or two in the meantime - don’t miss your chance to find out, dear Operatives. In fact, this is now a multi-generational affair: Lucas Meeker grew up at the winery, and is now the head winemaker, having learned the ropes from his father. You could say he grew up with the terroir of Dry Creek in his blood. If you’re looking for that Zinfandel that makes you say “Aaahhhh…“, look no further.
In the glass, you’ll find an attractive Zinfandel of surprising density with a garnet hue encircled by a thin auburn lip. After one sniff, you immediately know you’re in Dry Creek with notes of dusty bramble, dried golden grasses, fresh picked strawberry, rhubarb, and savory herbs. Lots of delicious spice is to be found on the palate, with toasty notes of walnut, cola, and vanilla. Here blackberry ganache and strawberry reign supreme as the dominant fruit flavors. It’s a pitch perfect Zinfandel, with a medium light body, easy tannin and massive fruit which drive a robust and approachable experience with a long finish with persistent fruit. A hearty beef stew, or perhaps even a Stroganoff would be ideal for this classic Sonoma Zin.
The Meeker Vineyard tasting room is located in downtown Geyserville, the epicenter of the 2019 Kincade fire in Sonoma County. If you are ever in the area, we strongly encourage you to stop by and give them a visit for what the Wall Street Journal described as “…one of the most enjoyable wine tasting experiences in all of Napa and Sonoma Counties.” In the meantime, don’t hesitate to pick up a bottle of their Barrel Select Zinfandel - you will not be disappointed.
