Pale to medium ruby/purple in color, sparkling scarlet highlights as it swirls. Notions of red and black cherries, pomegranate, plum, earth and cinnamon adorn the perfume. Flamboyant on the palate, with red currants, rhubarb jam, wild thyme and milk chocolate. Elegantly fruited on the finish and charged with wonderful energy on an impressive close. Wild salmon, Sockeye or Coho, with a wild rice pilaf and exotic mushrooms would make for an ideal pairing experience.
Dutton Ranch partially is why this wine is so exceptional. It is after all a heralded source for similarly styled wines with massive following from the likes of Kistler, Patz & Hall, and Bacio Divino, just to name a few. And then there’s the Kirk Venge factor. He is one of the top winemakers in California with numerous cult wines and perfect scores under his belt. When this wine was originally $85, it was priced right for the recognition and the quality it stood for. At $29 though, it’s up there with the deepest Pinot deals we have ever come across. Steal this voluptuous, profound beauty - who knows when we’ll see another one like this again.
Here’s what the wine press has to say:
92 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate - “Medium ruby in the glass, the 2016 Pinot Noir Widow’s Peak is scented of cranberry sauce, underbrush, black cherry jam, smoked meats, aniseed and dried tea leaves. The palate is medium-bodied and intense with fine, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long. Drink 2020-2027.”
