Mission Codename King Kong
What a Sweet Saturday dear Operatives this is!
All-day, we’re celebrating wines that are NOT SHY about their love of sugar, like us, and they flaunt it too. The range is huge. From the supremely balanced and seemingly dry Kabinett to the record-breakingly luscious Tokaji, bottled with more sugar than alcohol, we have something for everyone! While the highly limited golden elixirs linger just for today in the store below, we will be featuring, until it sells out, an unusual fortified sweet red…
To tweak a famous Robert Parker quote some, we find ourselves wondering; “If King Kong drank Port, would there be any doubt as to what choice it would be?” Not only does King Kong have great taste in the cars he smashes, but he also knows his wine! Inspired by a pun, this is Clark “The Wizard” Smith’s take on Vintage Port, showcasing that “any gorilla can make wine in California” but it takes a label genius like WineSmith to dial it this perfectly.
Nearly opaque but with a careful look a glowing rim emerges, dancing between ruby and purple. We dare you to slip this classic into an all Portuguese lineup and try to pick it as the Californian, the nose is a copycat and so is the palate: cherries coated in dark super high cocoa chocolate, with dusty sweet tannins and a savory edge. Surprisingly long on the finish, with the brandy perfectly integrating all the components from acids to tannins to sugar, to a mouthcoating luxury. This truly leaves us craving a flourless raspberry ganache chocolate cake and tastes like one too.
Do you believe in magic? It’s hard not to when witnessing Clark Smith’s wizardry. It’s widely acknowledged that he is one of the foremost experts in winemaking and chemistry in the world. While he continues to save the world one wine at a time since the 1980s during his endless consulting, teachings and seminars, his night job, when not making music, is crafting tiny production wines that HE likes to make and drink… Clark does like his Vintage Ports but with 750 equivalents of this pedigree and scrumptiousness costing $100+ a bottle, we believe he found the ultimate cure for the Weeknight Port Blues. Grab your before King Kong does!
