Mission Codename Unicorn

Wake up and smell the Espresso, dear Operatives!!! We can’t recall the last time we saw a 95-pointer Riserva for $25. You know why? Because we NEVER saw that before. Is it an illusion that a single vineyard red from a historic Tuscan fairytale castle is before us? Will a unicorn appear on the label next? Wait, what? There IS a unicorn on the label?! What did you put in my glass???

Classic garnet highlights under a deep ruby robe with a crimson edge. The aromas are of plum, cherry and red currant with blackberry, nutmeg, and chocolate come forth. Velvety tannins unveil the palate and lots of savory fruit with balsamic figs fill in underneath. Full-bodied, wholesome and delicious with a long lingering minerality on the royal finish. Florentine steak (the regional T-bone recipe Bistecca alla Fiorentina that is) with rosemary potatoes seems custom-tailored for it.

This wine so confirms our sneaky suspicion that Chianti Classico, especially with single-vineyard selections at the Riserva level, has its Mona Lisa eyes set on Brunello’s throne as a new ruler of the greatest reds of Tuscany. The thing is, for those in the know and say, for today, good luck finding a Brunello this good for $20 something a pop! Not even half bottles. With over 50% savings and an impeccable accolade, this Wine Spies exclusive is ready to knock your socks off. Too bad it’s severely limited, they just don’t make enough of these prized single vineyards…

Here’s what the wine press has to say:

95 Points – James Suckling - “Aromas of tar, dark berries, ash and hot stones follow through to a medium-to full-bodied palate with firm and silky tannins. A fresh and bright finish. Shows tension and energy. Drink in 2020.”
