2016 Las Madres Vineyard Carneros Syrah
Syrah •Las Madres Vineyard
California: Sonoma County: Carneros
We absolutely fell in love with this exemplary cool-climate red. Before we dive in, we need to address a problem. You probably are not drinking enough Syrah. And that is a mistake. Because we all adore Syrah LIKE THIS, even if we don’t know it. With immense appeal to palates that enjoy delicate Pinots and elegant Cabs, you’ll also love the 40% break on this 91 pointer bringing it down to the low $20s!
Reporting for Vinous, Antonio Galloni sure was an early fan; “These Syrahs are well worth seeking out and in my view, the Las Madres remains the most unique wine in this range. Robin Akhurst is a very talented winemaker. I very much look forward to following his career over the coming years and decades.” Akhurst has quite the resume behind him. Before he went into full winemaking mode he learned the ropes at some pretty big names - Domaine Leflaive, Two Hands, and Outpost. Then he took over as Assistant Winemaker at Carter Cellars in 2009 and was winemaker at Envy Wines for five years before he started at Apsara. He also holds a position as winemaker at Swanson Vineyards and Clos Pegase. Just imagine what all that experience brings to his very own label!
With a personality that shows a mélange of Côte-Rôtie into Carneros, which is nothing short of majestic. Medium-bodied, super silky, with loads of dark red raspberry, red cherry, and vanilla bean. There’s also have a meaty side, with mushrooms and fresh soil. Wildly complex and pure, it’s a must-have for anyone who loves Syrah and a must-try for everyone else.
Do yourself a solid and take a flyer on this - add at least one bottle to your locker. We PROMISE you will thank us.
91 Points - Wine Enthusiast
“Spicy, delicate, herbal and earthy, this wine’s dense midpalate eases into a seamless, lengthy expanse of cherry vanilla and baked plum. Robustly full bodied, it settles in the glass to retain energy and a lively finish of white pepper and toasted oak.”
On the paler side of ruby with appealing purple luminescence.
Loads of dark red raspberry, red cherry, and vanilla bean.
Medium-bodied, super silky, with a meaty side, mushrooms, and fresh soil.
Wildly complex and pure, seamlessly textured and long.
Versatile and super food-friendly, even grilled salmon over a risotto would do.
