2016 'Pierino' Neive Barbaresco DOCG
Nebbiolo •Pierino Vineyards
Yes! Single vineyard, uber rare Barbaresco under $30 does not come around these parts often. But when a beauty like this lands, we jump, crawl, cartwheel our way into making a deal real quick. This is a monumental wine, from maybe the best vintage this century and a beautiful addition to any wine collection.
Uncovering the secret Piemontese treasures takes effort, tons of time, travel, and most importantly word of mouth. It’s not what you know that matters most in small villages like Barbaresco, but who you know is crucial. So is who you are. Being born into a family with holdings in Neive, home of many legends, is a calling to make great Barbaresco. In his early 30s and having paid his dues, Davide is a Rivetti after all, and that name (Dante, Giorgio) means quality and legacy in Barbaresco. When local friends of ours (Passionné de Vin Imports) stumbled upon this, they could not resist buying all, and neither could we.
We bring you a Wine Spies Exclusive single-vineyard, tiny production Barbaresco under $30. No reviews, no ratings, in fact, no evidence that this even exists anywhere online! Sheer Nebbiolo bliss nonetheless, so outstanding that we keep pinching ourselves to make sure we’re not dreaming! Yours and yours alone for the taking.
For those who have not had the joy of a great Barbaresco, we urge you to scoop up at least one bottle. It’s a wine you must experience. From the beautiful light ruby color to the ethereal aromas of rose petals and lavender mixing with a massive burst of red ripe cherries on the highly perfumed nose. Sublime is the word here. Light as a peacock feather on the palate at first, gaining weight in silky sweet smooth tannins. The world-class finish turns serious as it builds up to a floral and fruit crescendo, with raspberry leaf, orange pekoe tea, and the leather of a brand new supercar. Enjoy with a handmade pasta rolled to your favorite shape, with a porcini cream sauce and tons of Parmiggiano would be an ideal pairing.
We have to drive this point home - the 2016 vintage absolutely rocked, and the wines coming out of it will floor you. Wine Spectator just reported finding “dozens of great vibrant and linear reds, showing elegance and refinement, with pure cherry, strawberry, raspberry and floral flavors accented by tobacco, tar, mineral and underbrush elements. If you’re new to Barbaresco or looking to fill some gaps in your cellar, these 2016s show amazing consistency and should offer pleasure for years to come.”
Antonio Galloni confirms for Vinous; “Just as I had expected, 2016 has turned out to be a truly magnificent vintage. Last year, I wrote - the 2016s, wines from a potentially historic vintage, may very well put Barbaresco on the map big time. As I traveled from producer to producer, I experienced that sense of excitement and energy I always feel when in the presence of important vintages and wines. - I feel exactly the same way today.”
This is the turf and terroir of the likes of GAJA and Giacosa mind you, and for their 2016 Barbaresco you could be paying up to 10 TIMES more and in all honestly would not land too far from the ethereal beauty we found here. Seize the Neive!
