You might not know this, but NASCAR Superstar Jeff Gordon was born in Vallejo, a town just south of Napa. He spent a lot of time in Napa, getting his first taste of racing around Calistoga speedway way back in the day. After retiring from his illustrious racing career, he merged into the slow lane and came back to California to launch a small wine label. He did this with help from August Briggs in Calistoga, and anyone familiar with them knows they make some seriously great wines. Unfortunately, the Jeff Gordon label was discontinued, but that means you reap the rewards of this opportunity, so put the pedal on the metal with this discovery.
While this vintage never made it out to the mainstream press, rave reviews of previous releases of this by Wine Enthusiast pinpoint “a bracing steeliness to the pineapple and green apple fruit, which is cleansed with racy acidity” found in a “lovely, complex Carneros Chardonnay will go with a wide variety of fare, from halibut and grilled tuna to broiled chicken and mushroom risotto.”
This toes the line between the rich, ripe style, and a leaner, crisp Chardonnay. A crisp vein of acidity keeps it from falling into the former category, but there’s no reigning in the fruit here. It cuts loose with plenty of ripe pineapples, fresh pear, toasted coconut, mouthwatering citrus flavors, and a bit of crushed toffee. We’re already tracking down some fresh Maine lobster and brioche buns to serve up – gonna be epic! You need this bottle of California sunshine in your life. Especially at this price!
