Mission Codename Abracadabra

“Incredible efforts… while not cheap, they deliver on the quality front.” – Wine Advocate

You should have waited for Wine Spies to get their hands on one, sir!

The $195 price seems hard to swallow and finding it for under $50 impossible. Ah…seems impossible. Thanks to our insane 75% off exclusive this 96-POINTER we’re making dreams a reality.

Operative Peter MEREN was there at the tasting table when we sampled this and has been hitting my personal rate limits on Facebook DMs asking for the day it will show up on the site. Well, Pete, today is the day!

There’s some Southern France wizardry happening in Les Aspres, that’s for sure. And we’re front row for the magic show. And because no trick is complete without a big reveal, we’re pulling some sorcery of our own - making nearly $150 of the bottle price go POOF.

Today’s red wizardry is courtesy of Charles Perez, the absolute MAGICIAN winegrower behind the Mas Bécha project. Rhône doyen Jeb Dunnuck gave it a righteous 96 points and variations of the word BRILLIANT appear multiple times in his review (we concur!)

When the iconoclastic, quality-obsessed Perez took over the Les Aspres estate (in the befitting wizard fashion, nestled between the Roussillon and the Canigou mountain range) in 2008, he immediately set about reducing his vine plantings. He focused only on the finest soils on the property, planting vines on only about 20% of the land. His next trick? Converting everything over to organic viticulture (achieving official certification three years later.)

The result? A quality transformation worthy of the most powerful transmogrification spells imaginable.

Charles Perez made it to the 10 discoveries of Wine Advocate list, stating that “our team of wine critics demonstrated their commitment to bringing to the public’s knowledge the talents of tomorrow, beyond their already extensive annual review of fine wines. We are pleased to reveal that RPWA’s team ‘Coup de Coeur’ for 2019” adding that “The young Charles Perez releases a tiny amount of wine under his own label, which comes from his estate vineyards in the Les Aspres region of the Roussillon… It’s a blockbuster effort that’s loaded with fruit and texture. It doesn’t come cheap nor should it), but it certainly shows the best of this up-and-coming region.”

Herbal, smoky, packed with ripe black fruit depth, peppery herbs, and beautiful richness, this is textbook Rhône style magic. To quote Jeb, “Bravo to the young Charles Perez, who’s undoubtedly one of the rising superstar winemakers in France.” With this kind of hocus pocus (remember, it’s nearly $150 off!), we expect our stash of it to make a quick disappearing act.

96 Points – Jeb Dunnuck “The 2019 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Les Aspres Bergerie du Camps de Nyils showed brilliantly, with a dense purple hue as well as a stunning nose of smoked red and black fruits, spiced meats, graphite, peppery herbs, and earth. It’s a rich, powerful wine yet stays graceful and elegant, with nicely integrated acidity, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. Hats off to vigneron Charles Perez for another brilliant wine from his estate in the Les Aspres region of the Roussillon.”
