Mission Codename Old tricks
“Pair with pork tacos.” – Wine Enthusiast
Sure, but Carnitas? Al Pastor? Chorizo?? They should be more specific next time, now we have to try all!
In any event, Andis has the right approach. World-class winemaking, plus seriously old vines in historic vineyards. We’ve brought you their last few vintages over the last few years, and EVERY TIME it goes quick! Today we’re back with a hot 2021. And it’s a beauty, with just-out-of-the-oven raves and a vertigo-inducing price drop from $50 to $27.
Serious Zin lovers won’t be disappointed. And you know how we LOVE our Zins here at Wine Spies.
Philippe Melka oversees Andis, while he stands atop the pyramid of Napa Valley. Having left his mark on countless cult wineries, producing innumerable high-scoring gems for places like Seavey, Lail, Vineyard 29, Dana Estates, etc., he shares Andis’ winemaking with another key consultant, Maayan Koschitzky who honed his skills at Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle. Talk about big names steering the ship. Not only that, but very few Zins exist with that kind of cultsy winemaking expertise behind them.
With plantings back to 1908 Di Stasio is the ultimate sandy, granite-filled, dry-farmed vineyard where some remarkably gnarly vines Zin thrive in the middle of nowhere. It’s one of the four heritage sites in these parts as recognized by the Historic Vineyard Society.
Raspberry tea leaf, dusty, jammy strawberries, and beautiful baking spices - cinnamon and nutmeg - they all share the stage here. It’s got that sweet pie crust + baked red fruit thing going on, all carried along on a weighty, silky texture into a finish that doesn’t quit.
At the state-of-the-art Andis winery, the most impeccable raw materials are crafted by this quality-obsessed team into perfect examples of authenticity, with just the right touch of polish to make them shine. As the word gets out (Andis recently made it to the “Amazing Zinfandels to Buy Right Now” list on Food & Wine for example) - these Zins are getting harder to find or keep in stock.
So… get yours while here at this price.
92 Points – Wine Enthusiast “This wine is fresh and lively, with aromas of red currant, black cherry and cracked black pepper. Other notes waft through, including jasmine tea, black cherry cream soda, pomegranate, habanero jelly and red-skinned apple. Layers of rocky sediment and silky tannins bring it all together. Pair with pork tacos.”
