2018 ‘Le Moulin de Chateaupanne’ Anjou Blanc
France: Loire Valley
Today’s wine pays tribute to our newest team member, Agent Chenin, and today also happens to be her birthday!
But that’s not reason enough to feature a wine, because it’s also a lip-smackingly, fantastically delicious bottle primed with all manners of key lime, honeydew melon, and almond blossoms in a crisp, bone dry style. And it comes from Anjou, quite literally ground zero for the world’s best Chenin!
We hand the mic over to the birthday girl:
“I know I always say more people should be drinking more white wines. BUT this wine just proves my point. Beautiful, elegant, crisp, and refreshing. If this wine were a timeless Hollywood starlet, she would be Grace Kelly. Subtle and subdued at first but once she opens up is full of character, warm and inviting while having a strong sense of self and a dry wit. This is a classic that everyone should try.”
Light with a deliciously inviting subtle whiff of citrus, mostly lemon. Fruity - VERY fruity but in the right way, tons of tension and freshness, loaded with grapefruit, melons, hints of almond, and flowers, mostly acacia blossoms. When we asked Agent Chenin to name another flower she said “can’t place which exactly, not jasmine or this wine would be too perfect in my opinion!” The finish is clean and refreshing, with lemongrass and lime, as the mild acidity gives it all a pleasant lift.
Agent Chenin is seriously into creative wine pairings, and this one really got her imagination going, “my dream pairing for this is Prosciutto wrapped melon, a pretty spring day surrounded by blooming flowers and nowhere to go. Followed by a spring salad, loaded with grilled chicken or shrimp for protein, along with tons of berries or stone fruit and a bright vinaigrette.”
Crab with aioli could work well too, lemon and garlic come to her mind specifically, while she finds most variations delicious. This wine, Chenin notes “is perfect for the California Dungeness Crab Season going on right now!” Grilled Fish Tacos with a mango salsa is another great candidate. All kinds of fruit, and not overly sweet desserts would also go great. Freshness would balance beautifully with an apple pie or a berry cobbler.
Starving by now? So are we! But hold the line, here are Chenin’s pairings for Take Out Champions:
A Vermicelli Noodle Bowl is the perfect Saturday late lunch pairing, resulting in a perfect ‘10/10’ balance while Thai Food is another sure bet, literally the whole menu at a Thai restaurant would go well with this wine. Sushi - fresh rolls, that have little to no fried items too. So, California, Rainbow, Cherry and Orange Blossoms, Spicy Tuna, Alaska rolls or any nigiri would be ideal.
In short, this is the ULTIMATE food white. With the almost 40% off, bringing it down to what you’d pay for a fancy sushi roll. Very limited, so pile up!
