Mission Codename Cirque du Citron
Pouilly-Fumé! 25 bucks! 94 points!
Need precision on your palate? Laser-sharp focus? Got briny oysters to down? Scallops to butter-poach?
Look no further.
With enough ‘crushed stones’ to pause any minerality-denier or build a shrine to white wine with, this is the juiciest, raciest thing that has graced our palates in a while.
Brilliant white gold with lemony accents greets the eye. Intensely perfumed, you’re nose soaks in waves of grapefruit pith, jasmine, honeysuckle, lime, and lemongrass. Onto the palate: SO. MUCH. ACIDITY. All enveloped inside a creamy, silky glove that delivers a soft blow within a jolt. Hard to describe really. Must experience to grasp what we mean. The finish is long and fascinating, as all citrus you can imagine peeks through a flinty backbone. Pair with what else but seafood, of course, from sushi to sashimi, from ahi poke to creamy shellfish linguine, and on and on.
Pouilly-Fumé is ground zero for the purest, most transparent manifestation of Sauvignon Blanc in the world, and this example is TEXTBOOK. Granted, you can even add a zero to experience some of the cult counterparts from this appellation, this is a stupendous value that more than delivers a glimpse of what makes Loire’s Sauvignons so irresistibly zesty and sought after.
Spring is around the corner, back up the truck!
94 Points – James Suckling
“Wonderful aromas of dried flowers to the cooked apple and some lime. Green papaya too. Medium to full body. Fruity and minerally finish. Drink now.”
