Heard of Bodegas Vega Sicilia? THE maker of Unico, one of the greatest wines of not only Spain but the world. What you see today is a little known wine from a source of theirs, along with a select few other high profile wineries in Ribera del Duero.
“After many years of selling their grapes to top producers, a family decided to make their own wine” wrote Forbes recently, explaining that “They use clones that come from cuttings of a pre-phylloxera Tempranillo that arrived in their town, La Horra, in 1908. Despite these bush vines giving low yields and requiring a significant amount of man hours to maintain their health and longevity, the Garcia Figuero family was committed to protecting these old vines when much of the rest of the world was pulling such uneconomical vines out. It is no wonder that iconic producers such as Vega Sicilia bought their grapes to use into their wines.”
Such pedigree and recognition at less than HALF PRICE? Exclusively on Wine Spies… Claim much as you can, thank us later. Drink now or cellar for years. Blow your connoisseur drinking buddies’ minds with a winery that they have never heard of but will always remember henceforth.
A gorgeous dark purple plum skin on the narrow glowing rim greets the eye quickly turning opaque into the core. The intense perfume is at once floral and fruity, a contrasting yet harmonious tension between fresh red and black berries countered by dried herbs and savory smoked meat nuances. The mouthfeel is chewy in texture, as candied cherries burst through the dark cocoa dusting of tannins, spiked up with hints of vanilla, clove, and nutmeg. Grippingly rich and captivatingly long, begging for some air to bloom further. Think a platter with charcuterie, aged Manchego and membrillo, or a chorizo and bean stew.
Did we say 54 bucks instead of $100?! If you can find it!!!
Vinous raves that “The style here emphasizes lush fruit, and the mostly hot recent vintages have resulted in rich, expressive wines that are generally pretty delicious soon after the vintage but more than worthy of cellaring. The Milagros de Figuero is always among the very best examples of Ribera del Duero… It can’t be long before more people catch on to what’s been happening here.”
So what are you waiting for, can’t click for ya!
95 Points – Tim Atkin MW
*“A step up on the already impressive 2015 - a reflection of the vintage rather than a shift in winemaking style - this bush-vine Tinto Fino is from cooler north, east and west-facing vineyards between 800 and 820 metres on the southern side of the village. Fresh and perfumed, it has filigree tannins, crunchy acidity, violet and green herb undertones and very subtle oak integration. Drink 2022-2030.”
94 Points – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous
“Deep, lurid violet. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes candied dark berries, cherry, licorice, exotic spices and potpourri. Pliant, palate-staining cherry-vanilla, blackberry and violet pastille flavors convey a suave combination of power and energy while picking up spice and floral pastille nuances with air. Smooth and seamless in texture, with polished tannins and powerful finishing thrust. Drink 2024-2033.”
