Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Mission Codename VG = Very Good

“The wines produced under the Vincent Girardin label today are superb and that I’m happy to have some in my own cellar.” - Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Happy Saturday! 2014 White Burg! Vincent Girardin! Steal me under $30!

Wine Advocate continues… “Vincent Girardin debuted as a winemaker in 1982, creating his négociant Maison in 1990 with his family Domaine holdings at its core, and he is distinguished by insisting on purchasing grapes as opposed to must or finished wines. When Girardin’s expanding holdings became too much to handle, Eric Germain - brother of Jean-François Germain, who presides over Meursault reference-point Domaine Henri Germain - was brought in to supervise winemaking in 2002.”

Antonio Galloni’s Vinous quotes the winemaker on this superb year, “enologist Eric Germain said ‘2014 is certainly one of my best vintages’ …there’s no doubt that many ‘14s show a creaminess of texture—and sometimes a distinct sweetness to their fruit—early on, with their underlying acidity and minerality only becoming apparent with aeration.”

This tiny vineyard is a stone’s throw from Chassagne-Montrachet, and the wine shows it by sharing that perfect balance of decadent stone fruits and lively mineral nuances. It’s a superb white barely showing any age, with many years of prime drinking ahead.

Such a small production gem that there are no reviews, except for Wilfred Wong raving, “The 2014 Vincent Girardin Santenay Terre d’Enfance is one of the most prodigious Chardonnays I have tasted in this calendar year. This wine excels with immense volume and style. Its enticing aromas of ripe peach, chalk, and stones are persistent and impressive. Pair it with Cantonese style ginger and scallion crab.”

When VinePair says that “for the price this is a great example of quality that can be found in Beaune” they mean at the full price, not at our $29 today, which is a ridiculous deal given the cost of such great white Burgundies nowadays, it’s a buy-me-by-the-case while it lasts opportunity.
