Winemaker and Owner Seth Cripe perfectly embodies the American wine dream. He left his home at 17 after a rough upbringing. With dreams of California vines in his mind, he loaded his beat-up Subaru and headed to Napa Valley to work a harvest at Swanson Vineyard. Along the way he met Marco Cappelli, Swanson’s winemaker. And that set his path into motion.
That’s the short version - but if you’re interested in the full story, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate offers up all the details of this extraordinary journey
That path led to a few more years at Swanson before Cripe headed to Caymus for almost seven years while Chuck Wagner, owner and winemaker, sent the young Cripe to Burgundy every couple of years. There he learned about high-density planting and cellar practices and bring them back to Napa. The young apprentice was becoming the master…
Cripe started Lola with a focus on Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays made in a pure and natural style. Don’t think natty though- clean and pure in fruit and acid. Exactly what you’d expect from Russian River. And for this price, it should make any lover of Kistler, Siduri or William Selyem blush. And then do some math on how many bottles of this they could have bought instead…
On the nose, you get cola and red fruit with layers of intensity. On the tongue, this is Russian River at its finest - supple texture with elegant tannins and a finish that lasts for days. Rose petals, fresh cut cedar, black tea and forest floor play perfectly with bright acid. So beautifully made, we can’t believe we can offer it at this price.
Do NOT delay on this one! It won’t stick around.
