Mission Codename Your heart goes Klopp
It’s Fall but the temps are still Summer
Or something like that. What matters is we have A Cobb cherry with massive (97/98) scores on the lineup today, for your savvy eyes only.
Per Antonio Galloni’s Vinous these are “among the most distinctive artisan wines being made in California today. Readers will not want to miss them.”
You hear that, “readers?”
The Cobb family were some of the pioneers of the rustic Sonoma Coast with their Coastlands Vineyard and have honed their perfecting of wines with the marine influence for decades now. Their son and winemaker, Ross Cobb is a virtuoso, having worked with cult Chardonnay cognoscenti like Williams Selyem, Flowers, and Hirsch. The guy knows what he’s doing!
One of the 3 Chardonnays in the portfolio, this is a knockout. H. Klopp is a site where fog abounds right at the southernmost top of the Green Valley of the Russian River Valley.
The acidity is through the roof, but there’s also a perplexing inherent richness of fruit here, borderline tropical and impossible to stop sipping. Ethereally balanced, piercingly focused, it just leaves one asking themselves, does Chardonnay get better?
As Vinous points out about ANY Cobb, this is not to be missed by any true lover of Pinot OR Chardonnay. Do future-you a favor and take a few to drink now and a few to age.
Super allocated while they last - forgive us!
97 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“The 2021 Chardonnay H. Klopp Vineyard, from vines planted in classic Goldridge soils, is bursting with alluring, layered aromas: quince paste, honey and white peach are complemented by accents of roasted almonds and graham cracker, and the palate matches that intensity with its highly concentrated, honeyed flavors. All that flavor is supported by a spine of vibrant acidity, and a touch of textural grip drives a very long finish. This is so delicious! 300 cases were made. Drink 2025-2035.”
97 Points – Decanter
“H Klopp is nestled in the foggy lower Sebastopol Hills, on the Goldridge series loam soils, and is dedicated to Chardonnay for the Cobb portfolio. Bright florals, petrichor and minerality, are all over the aromas. Layered aromas of grilled lemon peel and seaspray, House Klopp grows Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the foggy lower Sebastopol Hills. Ross started working with them about 15 years ago and reasoned with them to plant to Chardonnay; the Klopp vineyard is only used for Chardonnay for the Cobb portfolio—a combination of clones: Old Wente, Mt Eden, Clone 4 and Robert Young. The palate gives a lively, mineral freshness and continues to leap forward with sea spray saline, oyster shells and loads of lemon cream. Drink 2024-2037.”
