Mission Codename Wilder springs
Heyoooooo! Operative Koeltl and Downing - we heard you and today we’re back with another P&Henomenal offer from THE Patz & Hall.
The Telepathy Tapes prove mindreading is real, and our precognition already registered a “sold out” message on this Pinot. The only thing we’re still fuzzy on is how long until that happens?
If the Chardonnays and Pinots from Bootlegger’s Hill, Little Boot, Jenkins Ranch are any indication, you have a few hours before we tack this “Alder Springs” to the list.
Wine Spectator says it’s “Winegrowing on the Edge: Carved from the Mendocino County wilderness, Alder Springs Vineyard is producing some of California’s most distinctive wines.” They noted Patz & Hall is “One of California’s most consistently outstanding Pinot producers.” STEAL at $28.
Over the years well-off collectors stockpiled single vineyards like this from Patz & Hall. And they did so at well-deserved prices, usually in the $55-115 range. In our decades in the business, we’ve seen very, very few of the most desirable wine brands and their top wines offered at absurd “what’s-the-catch” type prices. In this case, there is NO catch.
We echo what San Francisco Chronicle says, “Patz & Hall understands Pinot Noir and Chardonnay lovers. Its ability to express the nuances of these two grapes in the glass can transport you to one of the many prized properties where they grow.”
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate endorsed them with the highest of praises, saying “Patz & Hall has a long and enviable track record, making Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from some of the very finest single vineyards in Northern California… and the wines are sure bets”. At today’s price, that statement couldn’t be truer.
This reflects the style you know and love - medium bodied and balancing elegance with power. Showcasing red plums, cassis, and strawberry whips flanked with baking spices, exotic woods, and bright acidity to keep it fresh and lively.
No reviews on the 2018, but a Cellar Selection and many outstanding scores come on previous vintages, with glowing notes like “this wine, from a unique single-vineyard on steep slopes, has power along with complexity” (Wine Enthusiast v2017) and “very fine, elegant and medium-bodied in the mouth, it has silky tannins and a lively backbone, finishing with impressive persistence” (Wine Advocate v2015).
At this price… there remains not much else to say or think about, except move swiftly and stake your claim!
