Mission Codename Marengo-round and round...
“Marco Marengo’s Barolos are consistently outstanding…” – Antonio Galloni
Barolo fans – think you can’t possibly find a 97+pt aromatically powerful, profound, yet debonair Cru Barolo for under $100? Or even under $70?… Think again!
Established in 1899, Marco Marengo is the fifth generation of his family to farm this vineyard in commune of Barolo. Chilean soil guru Pedro Parra is a massive fan of Marengo. In his book Terroir Footprints, Parra underlines that Marco is a true winegrower, “he is exactly the type of producer who is more concerned about his vineyard than with being a modernist or traditionalist.”
As a single vineyard, Brunate is unique. It has long been considered a Grand Cru of the region. The range of 750 to 1300 feet above sea level helps preserve freshness in the wine, while its pure south-facing aspect captures the sun ALL DAY, providing a fuller ripeness and body. Overall, it’s a powerhouse of expressive aromatics, rock-solid structure, and a dense core of fruit to balance savory and earthen complexity.
And in a classic vintage like 2021? Whispers already compare it to 2016 and 2010 for its combination of structure, elegance, and freshness. Across the board it’s amazing, but in the hands of an adept like Marengo? Excelsior!
It’s truly one to stock your cellar full of, and drink anytime in the coming decades.
97+ points of Power, Energy, and Effort! It’s not too good to be true – It’s CYBER MONDAY!
97+ Points – Wine Advocate “M. Marengo has released a line of delicate, elegant and phenomenal wines. Only the 2023 Nebbiolo d’Alba Vigna Valmaggiore, from a challenging vintage, is out of character. The other wines I tasted from 2021 are all excellent, and the pricing is competitive, considering the vintage and the appellation. A stunning beauty, the M. Marengo 2021 Barolo Brunate sticks to a classic Nebbiolo playlist. It delivers high tones of dried mint and blue flower, with that menthol-like note being a distinctive element of this site. There is a stony, taut character as well, and the wine feels vibrant and alive in terms of mouthfeel. The tannins are polished and firm. I recommend putting the Brunate aside for another 10 years. Drink 2027 – 2047”
96 Points – James Suckling “A dark wine with dried flowers, prunes, cherry stones, earth, minerals and spices on the nose. Full-bodied on the palate, it shows density, fruit concentration, chewy acidity, ripe, muscular, dusty tannins and a lifted finish. Best from 2027..”
95 Points – Wine Spectator “Expressive and bursting with juicy cherry and raspberry fruit, along with warm hay, rose hip and stony mineral aromas and flavors. Beautifully balanced and resonant, with a long, complex and fruit-filled aftertaste. Best from 2028 through 2045. 400 cases made, 250 cases imported.”
