Mission Codename Daydream Corbeaux

Whoa! Y’all were THIRSTY for the Corton. We’re promoting this Gevrey Premier Cru to the feature position. And frankly, it’s worthy of the slot. With a similarly small parcel, we don’t expect it to last long…

We can’t stop dreaming about this wine!! 💭 Tasting it was a WOW moment, and it just kept getting more BEAUTIFUL on day two and day three! Layered complexity, and a nose you fall in love with, one you keep sticking your nose right back into the glass even after the glass is empty. (if you haven’t tried that trick…you should) :)

If you’re a Burg fan, or a fan of Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin, this is your under the radar overachiever! Even if it wasn’t on sale, it totally over delivers on quality! It’s grown on a small slice of the famous Les Corbeaux Premier Cru vineyard, right on the northern corner of the Route des Grands Crus, a stone’s throw from Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin itself. Honestly, GC Mazis-Chambertin, usually fetches upper hundreds a bottle! 🤯 Honestly, how good is this for $109. It’s the most grand cru like premier cru we have had in a while!

And let’s talk about that name for a second! “Les Corbeaux” means “the crows” in French, earned because the site used to be a medieval cemetery, with crows circling the graves. Fun talking point with Halloween coming up! (that’s us, you know we like to have fun)!

Denis Bachelet and Bruno Clavelier also farm small slices of Les Corbeaux. Next door, on the actual Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin, the neighbors include Domaine Denis Mortet, Domaine Vachet-Rousseau, Maison Albert Bichot’s ‘Cuvée Madeleine Collignon’, and one of the most sought after names in all of Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Armand Rousseau!

Three generations of winemaking go into this bottle! Father René Leclerc has been making wine two doors down since 1962. Son François grew up helping him, trained in Oregon at Cristom, and some time in California, came home to Gevrey-Chambertin, and started this label in 2003.

He still makes it the old way. Native yeast. Barely any new oak. An ancient press that’s seen more harvests than most of us have seen birthdays. No fining, no filtering, and somehow still pure, modern Burgundy in the glass. Judge this wine alone and he’s a maestro of texture, flavor, and complexity all at once! We were really impressed!

And 2022? The critics are not playing around! Allen Meadows at Burghound calls the vintage a “modern classic” for the Côte de Nuits, ripe yet “wonderfully refreshing and transparent.” William Kelley at Vinous calls it “another very strong” vintage, with “excellence in both colors.” That’s the real deal!

And it wasn’t just me who loved it, our whole team of Burgundy Agents did too!! Dark cherry and a snap of stem spice hit first, white pepper right behind it, violets, so many flowers, clay and limestone coming through so clean it’s almost startling. Black fruit and licorice curl into the nose, cassis and raspberry stacking up under a slick of wet forest floor and mushroom. Tannins are tight, fine and polished, built to hold this together for a decade or more. The whole thing moves silky, refined, incredible depth and structure…long finish too!

If you can’t wait to try it, give it a couple of hours to unwind. It would play nicely with roast duck, venison, wild boar, or a proper Coq au Vin. Keeping it vegetarian? A lentil and root vegetable stew earns its spot too. Cheese course? Or forget dinner, just have this wine with Aged Comté or Époisses, no notes needed. Or let it sit or cellar it! This one only gets better with time!!

$165 SRP. $109 our price. Third-generation Gevrey-Chambertin, grown on a hillside named for crows and graves, still standing quietly in the shadow of Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin.
