Mission Codename Beyond the Moon
We’ve been featuring the wines of Ty Caton for more than a decade, now. Why? Because Ty’s wines are superb - and our Operatives (that’s you!) adore his wines. Today’s 2015 Moon Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon is a big boy, with bold aromas, big flavors, and plenty of tannin. Enjoy now - or cellar for years.
On the nose, rich fruit and spice play in perfect harmony, with aromas of boysenberry, plum, blueberry, spiced cherry candy, cedar, and vanilla. Youthful flavors on the palate of, young blackberry, cassis, bramble, tobacco leaf, twigs, spice box, dried fig, cedar, and subtle black pepper.
Officially recognized in 1981, the Moon Mountain AVA (American Viticultural Area) is a sub-appellation of the broader Sonoma Valley AVA in Sonoma County California. With 1500 acres under vine, the area ranges from 400 feet in elevation to over 200 feet. Thin, volcanic soils, which impart a certain terroir rest on ancient lava flows. Winds from both the San Pablo Bay to the south and the Pacific Ocean to the west provide the grapes with evening cooling. These all add up to wines of rich, distinctive character. Moon Mountain has been a source of cherished wine grapes since the 1860’s. Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel reign supreme in this area, which is crowned by Louis M. Martini’s famed Monte Rosso vineyard.
Ty’s wines have been featured on Wine Spies nearly 30 times in these last 10+ years. We keep going back for more because we love his wines. This special treat, which hails from the Moon Mountain AVA is offered to you with our heartiest recommendation. The QPR (Quality to Price Ratio) for this wine is through the roof!
