Mission Codename KLassic
“Is this the real life… is this just fantasy?”
REAL AS IT GETS!! In our nonstop, BANG-energy-drink-fueled 24/7 quest to track down the most exceptional wines for you, we scored a fist-pumping deal on a wildly popular Cab. Karl Lawrence! One of the last remaining values in cult Napa Cab, boasting 93 and 94 points, and with a sweet third-off break to further sweeten the deal. Chalk up another mark in the “win” column!
Established in 1991 by Ric Henry, Michael Karl Trujillo, and Bryan Lawrence Henry, Karl Lawrence Cabernet has been nearly impossible to get for years. Small-production, high-scoring, and made from exceptional fruit from a who’s who of elite vineyards in Napa - Beckstoffer’s To Kalon and Dr. Crane, as well as the Gary Morisoli and Herb Lamb vineyards – to name a few historic sources.
Ric Henry after all had a vision “since my brother and I and Michael had no street creds, our M.O. became that we’d get the best grapes, make the best wine, and then we’d undersell everybody.” To that end, he recruited Bruce Devlin as winemaker, with 2 decades under his belt since graduated from UC Davis.
Wondering what it’s like? Think Caymus Special Selection. Except you can get THREE bottles of this for one of those. And that means you can open it up, no regrets, and dive straight into a vortex of warm oak, mocha, blackberry, black licorice, and sweet tobacco. Structured, but with mellow tannins, it drinks so nicely with a “forward, sexy style” as Jeb so wisely noted. He also added that even at the original $75 it’s a “smoking value” and that was before it sold out and we unearthed this tiny secret allocation.
Serious collectors already checked out of here long ago to snag theirs… we can’t click for you, but if we could, we’d guide at least a few of these into your stash.
94 Points – Jeb Dunnuck
“Terrific. Incorporating close to 10% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot, and tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah, it was brought up all in new barrels. Its deep purple color is followed by classic Cabernet notes of green tobacco, cedar, new leather, and plenty of darker berry and raspberry-like fruits. It has the more forward, sexy style of the vintage, plenty of classic, if not old-school, character, and should keep for 15+ years. It’s a smoking value. Drink 2019-2034.”
93 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.5% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 0.5% Petite Sirah. Deep garnet-purple colored, it sings of black and red currants, crushed black berries and black cherries with touches of menthol, cedar chest and Marmite toast. Medium to full-bodied with plenty of energy, it has a bright, refreshing style with plush, ripe tannins, finishing long and juicy. Drink 2018-2033.”
